👵 "AI To Talk To The Dead" Sparks Backlash on Social Media
A viral video posted on X by 2Wai co-founder and actor Calum Worthy is stirring up serious debate.
In the ad, a mom gives her pregnant daughter advice over a video call. Ten months later, she's reading a bedtime story to her grandson. Ten years after that, she chats with him on his way to school. Thirty years later, she discovers she's about to become a great-grandmother. Ultimately, we see the daughter recording a short video of her mom, the one used to create the AI avatar they've been interacting with all along.
📷 2Wai claims it can create a digital version of someone using a 3-minute video. They say the avatar doesn't just replicate the user's appearance but also their personality. After someone passes away, their family gets full control of the AI version.
The app is currently in beta on the App Store, with an Android version coming soon. It is free now, but paid features and subscriptions are planned.
👎 In the comments, people called it dystopian and compared the ad to the Black Mirror episode "Be Right Back," where AI is used to bring a loved one back from the dead. Others say the tech messes with grief, preventing people from processing loss in a healthy way.
Would you like to make an avatar for your great-grandkids?
❤️ — Yes, it's touching
🔥 — No, it's scaring
🤔 — Not sure
