👨💻 Ilya Sutskever: "Superintelligence Might Appear Within the Next 5-20 years"
Co-founder and former chief researcher at OpenAI, Ilya Sutskever, who founded the startup Safe Superintelligence Inc. in 2024, spoke in an interview about the future of AI and superintelligence—and how these technologies could change the world:
✅ From 2012 to 2020 it was the era of AI research, and from 2020 to 2025 it was the age of scaling. Now we are back to the age of research again, but with greater capabilities. In just a few years, scaling has overtaken everything else, and we got to the point where there are more companies than ideas.
✅ Developing super-powerful AI could take 5 to 20 years. Implementation will be gradual and specialized. For example, superintelligence for really complicated economic activity or an AI company which is really good at litigation. At some point, the economy will react, and rapid growth will begin.
✅ The AI of the future will be incomparably more powerful. And then AI companies will start taking AI safety much more seriously, even with a touch of paranoia. Truly powerful AIs would be restrained in some ways—with some kind of agreement even between fierce competitors.
✅ Super-powerful AI will be able to learn as well as a human who has mastered certain important skills through evolution.
"It will be easier to build an AI that cares about sentient life than an AI that cares about human life alone, because the AI itself will be sentient," says Sutskever.
✅ Perhaps humans themselves will become part-AI with some kind of Neuralink. And then we will begin to interact with each other on a completely different level.
