🏀 The Unitree G1 Robot Now Plays Basketball
The developers trained the robot's AI using standard videos of human basketball players, which they converted into 3D models, along with high-precision motion-sensor recordings from experienced players.
With ordinary imitation learning, the robot perfectly mimicked movements from the training data. However, the ball would still drop because the simulation did not account for physical contact. So, the robot had to track its own movements, the ball's bounce, and the positions of its hands.
⛹️♂️ As a result, the algorithm mastered dribbling, shooting, jumping, defensive moves, and other elements. A separate high-level model manages all these movements, allowing the robot to play continuously, just like a human. After a shot, it can run over to pick up the ball and continue the match.
