😥 Users of AI Companions Have Higher Levels of Loneliness, Anxiety, and Stress

That's the takeaway from a new study by researchers at Tampere University, who surveyed nearly 6,000 people across France, Germany, Italy, Finland, Poland, and Ireland.

Across these countries, 9% to 18% of residents regularly chat with AI companions like Replika and Character AI.

Interestingly, there's no connection between chatbot use and in-person socializing. AI companions aren't replacing friends or family—they're tools people use alongside social interaction.

What does this mean?

The researchers aren't claiming that chatbots cause loneliness—it's hard to say which causes which.

It's more likely that people who already struggle emotionally will seek comfort from AI companions.

Developers often promote these tools as a "friend who's always there." Still, the study shows they don't actually provide effective psychological support.

Why do you think people talk to chatbots?

🔥 — Lack of real social connection
❤️ — Looking for emotional support
😐 — Escaping from reality
