📞 AI Is Monitoring Prison Calls

Securus Technologies is rolling out an automated system to analyze phone calls and correspondence of inmates in prisons and migrant detention centers. Flagged fragments are reviewed by officers. If violations are found, inmates may face disciplinary action—or even new charges.

"We can point that large language model at an entire treasure trove [of data] to detect and understand when crimes are being thought about or contemplated, so that you're catching it much earlier in the cycle," states Securus Technologies President Kevin Elder.

Securus claims success in combating gang operations but refuses to provide specific case examples due to secrecy. Meanwhile, civil rights advocates point to risks involving attorney-client privilege and racial bias in dialect recognition, which may lead to false accusations.

"This is coercive consent; there is literally no alternative for communicating with your family. It’s not just the incarcerated. The voices of millions of children are being indexed as they try to talk to their parents. The system harvests this biometric data for the state," explains Worth Rises Director Bianca Tylek.
