💦 AI Sent Tourists into the Tasmanian Backcountry in Search of Fake Healing Hot Springs
The tiny town of Weldborough in northern Tasmania suddenly found itself flooded with tourists looking for what were described as one of "the island's best hot springs."
"It was only a couple of calls to start with, but then people began turning up in droves. I was receiving probably five phone calls a day, and at least two to three people arriving at the hotel looking for them," says local hotel owner Kristy Probert.
For such a remote place, the sudden surge was unprecedented—especially since Weldborough doesn't have any hot springs at all. The only water attraction is an icy river, which locals sometimes jump into after a sauna.
🔎 How Did This Happen?
Local agency Tasmania Tours utilized AI to generate SEO-friendly articles, such as "What to See in…". The content was usually reviewed before publishing, but this time an AI-generated article slipped through unchecked, company owner Scott Hennessey admits.
Hennessey says he and his wife run a small, honest family business, and competing with bigger players means constantly publishing fresh online content. This time, he says, outside contractors dropped the ball. "We are legit, we are real people," he insists.
For travelers, though, the takeaway is simple: plan trips more carefully and don't take everything you read online at face value.
