🧬 Stem Cells Helped Treat Age-Related Frailty

Biotech company Longeveron tested its experimental therapy on 148 volunteers aged 70 to 85. Each participant received a single infusion of mesenchymal stem cells derived from donated bone marrow.

Nine months later, patients who received the treatment were able to walk an average of 63 meters farther in a six-minute walk test than those in the control group—about a 20% improvement. Their overall physical health also showed measurable gains.

Mesenchymal stem cells can differentiate into various types of tissue and release anti-inflammatory molecules. Researchers believe the therapy reduces inflammation around small blood vessels, which may have contributed to the improved physical performance.

💉 Frailty syndrome is characterized by weakness, low endurance, and slower recovery after illness or falls. It affects an estimated 10% to 25% of people over 65, and more than a quarter of those over 85 years old.

No serious side effects were reported during the trial. Still, the path to approval remains uncertain, since frailty isn't officially recognized as a separate disease. The company hopes to secure approval by showing that the treatment reduces fall risk or improves survival rates after surgery.
