🔥 Japanese Engineers Bring Smell to VR
A compact device developed at the Institute of Science Tokyo attaches to a VR headset and releases specific scented air streams toward the user's nose, simulating realistic smells during virtual experiences.
⚙️ Inside the device are eight cartridges, each containing a different basic aroma compound. The system mixes these in varying proportions to recreate a wide range of smells—much like a display generates any color from red, green, and blue.
The device can be synced with VR content so the scent changes as the user moves through a game or virtual environment. A built-in fan clears the previous smell before the next one is released, preventing them from blending together.
📌 The technology isn't just for games. Developers believe scents could be used in VR training for rescue workers, rehabilitation programs for older adults, and even online perfume shopping.
Would you try VR with smells?
❤️ — Yes, it would feel more realistic
🔥 — No, visuals and sound are enough
