❤️ AI Helped a Son Extend His Mother's Life With Stage IV Cancer
The mother of AI specialist Pratik Desai was diagnosed with stage IV duodenal adenocarcinoma. Doctors discharged her without a referral to an oncologist—making it clear she had no chance to survive.
So Desai decided to take action himself. He used NotebookLM and Claude to analyze all of his mother's medical records—over 1,600 pages in total. With AI's help, he searched for doctors, learned about the disease, and tracked her symptoms and complaints.
➡️ His system found several errors in her CT scan report—including three instances where the wrong type of cancer was listed. Later, AI discovered that switching his mother from a liquid diet to solid food 48 hours after a blood transfusion triggered bleeding, which twice put her in critical condition.
💡 Desai believes AI bought his mother more time. She lived 76 days after diagnosis—long enough to say goodbye to her loved ones. He now shares his system with friends and acquaintances. One of them used it to understand his own mother's treatment and impressed her doctors with his deep knowledge of the case — even though he works in marketing and isn't a doctor.
Some doctors criticized Desai, pointing out that AI makes things up and is only right about 70% of the time.
"I responded: let's grade the medical system the same way. We expect AI to be perfect, but the medical world isn't," Desai says.
Would you trust AI with your medical care?
❤️ — Yes, doctors make mistakes too
🤔 — No, only a real doctor
