✈️ Urban Birds Are More Afraid of Women Than of Men

Scientists observed bird behavior in five European countries and found that titmice, sparrows, pigeons, and other birds fly away more quickly when approached by women compared to men.

Ornithologists conducted 2,700 measurements for 37 bird species in city parks and green areas. Men and women wearing identical clothing and of roughly the same height approached birds feeding and recorded the distance at which they became frightened and flew away.

❗️ Everywhere, when women approached, all bird species on average flew away 1 meter sooner.

"Urban birds clearly react to subtle cues that humans do not easily notice," notes study co-author Yanina Benedetti.

ℹ️ Scientists have no explanation for the phenomenon—only hypotheses. Perhaps birds react to pheromones, scents, body shape, or gait. Another theory is linked to the fact that in ancient societies, women more often hunted small game, including birds.
