Tawny frogmouth is not an owl but a nightjar
The species name, strigoides, means owl-like because this bird is not an owl! This is a tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) and it’s actually part of the nightjarfamily!
Tawny frogmouths are medium-sized nocturnal/crepuscular birds that get their name from their huge “frog-like” beaks that are used to capture insects. These beaks are notably different from that of owls. Owls have narrow, downwards-facing beaks that are used to tear prey apart.
