Red crabs begin annual migration to mate and spawn in the ocean
The annual Christmas Island Red Crab migration begins with the first wet season rainfall. This usually occurs in October or November, but it can occur as late as December or January.
Red crabs leave their homes at the same time and begin marching towards the ocean to mate and spawn. Male crabs lead the migration, and females join them along the way.
