⚓️ MONSTER DEEP SEA JELLYFISH ⚓️
This monster deep sea Scyphozoan, the giant phantom jellyfish (Stygiomedusa gigantea) is thought to be one of the largest invertebrate predators in the deep ocean!
This jelly is one of the bigger species reaching ~1m/3.3ft wide and it’s oral arms can reach 10m/33ft in length! Imagine coming across this monster jellyfish in the deep!
This jelly is thought to have a global distribution, with exception of the Arctic Ocean, and has only been sighted 100 times! This is due to the challenges associated with accessing the deep ocean, however, mbari news have and continue to work to develop new tools and technologies to study this and heaps of other deep sea critters in their natural habitats!
