Have you ever heard the story of Balto the sled dog? In 1925, the small town of Nome in Alaska experienced a deadly outbreak of diphtheria. The closest remedy was in Anchorage, nearly 1,000 miles away. Thanks to a relay of dog sledding teams, the most iconic one being led through a blizzard by Balto, medication was delivered in time to cure those who were affected by the disease.
