Antarctica is the southernmost and fifth largest continent on Earth, with a landmass almost entirely covered by a massive ice sheet. It is known for its extreme conditions, being the highest, driest, windiest, coldest, and iciest continent. The continent is approximately 5.5 million square miles (14.2 million square km) in size, with ice covering about 98% of the land. It is divided into two regions: East Antarctica, which is mostly composed of a high ice-covered plateau, and West Antarctica, which is mostly an ice sheet covering a group of mountainous islands.
