Crown of thorns starfish is a threat to the great barrier reef

Did you know that one of the main threat to the Great Barrier Reef is the crown Crown-of-Thorns starfish? These spiky predators feed on corals causing significant damage to the reef. Outbreaks harm coral reefs and reduce biodiversity. What makes it worse is the limited presence of natural predators like the Triton’s Trumpet (large sea snail), Titan Triggerfish, Maori Wrasse (Napoleon fish), scorpion fish and starry puffer fish, which help control their population. In this video we can see a Starry puffer fish which have the ability to feed on Crown-of-Thorns starfish and help keep their numbers in check. However, various factors such as overfishing and habitat degradation have disrupted the delicate balance, allowing the starfish population to explode. The Australian government’s plan to control Crown-of-Thorns starfish include culling programs, research, and partnerships so they’re working to protect the Great Barrier Reef from this big threat.
Finally let me tell you that if you ever see a Crown-of-Thorns be careful! As they’re extremely dangerous for us so no touching unless you’re trained professional.
