Many seabirds, including the common murre, breed in high densities on ledges above the ocean. These ledges are chosen as they provide protection against most land predators and offer a safe environment for the young birds to be raised in. This can also be very dangerous however, especially when chicks attempt to launch themselves off the ledge before they’re fully developed, and can result in high mortality rates for young seabird species. 🐧 🏔
