Young northern saw-whet owls have a cinnamon-colored belly and a largely unspotted brown back and crown.

They begin their first molt in late summer, only a few months after hatching, and by autumn most body plumage resembles the adult pattern.

However, the juvenile wing and tail feathers are retained through the first winter and replaced during later molts.
