Arctic fox kits are born in underground dens and soon explore the surrounding tundra. During the warmer months, their fur is brown or gray, helping them blend in with rocks and plants.

By winter, most Arctic foxes turn white for camouflage in the snow. A smaller group known as blue morph foxes develops a bluish-gray winter coat instead, which helps them blend into coastal areas with less snow.
