Maned wolf uses long legs to see over tall grasses

The maned wolf’s long legs are an adaptation for moving through the tall grasses of the South American cerrado, giving it a clear line of sight over the vegetation.

It is the only species in its genus, not closely related to wolves or foxes, but a distinct branch of the South American canid family.

They feed on a varied diet of small animals and fruit, with the wolf apple (Solanum lycocarpum) making up a significant portion of its diet.

This individual was photographed in Linhares, Espírito Santo, Brazil.
